Samuel speaking Rwandan Sign Language

This video was recorded by Daniel Bögre Udell and Kristen Tcherneshoff in Kigali, Rwanda. Rwandan Sign Language (RSL) is currently unclassified, although some have postulated that it developed from, or has been influenced by, Ugandan Sign Language. The second edition of the RSL dictionary is in the final stages, with a digital accompaniment. The dictionary project is being completed by the Rwanda National Union of the Deaf (RNUD) and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities. The RNUD also provides sign language training courses for people who are deaf, interpreters, and parents of Deaf children. Activists are pushing for the recognition of RSL as one of the country's official languages. This would make it the fifth official language of Rwanda, alongside Kinyarwanda, English, French, and Swahili.
