This video was recorded by Samuel Okpoti in Ghana. According to a 2004 census, Ga is spoken by as many as 745,000 people in southeastern Ghana, in and around the capital city Accra. A Kwa language of the Niger-Congo linguistic family, it is distantly related to over a thousand languages across Africa and is most closely related to Adangme, another language of Ghana. It is partially recognized by the Ghanaian government as one of the 16 languages regulated by the Bureau of Ghana Languages. Traditionally an oral language, it has been written since the 18th century with a variety of the Latin alphabet initially developed by the Danish-Ghanaian educator Christian Jacob Protten. The Ga alphabet has experienced a number of iterations, with a recent revision in 1990.
