Punjabi is spoken by more than 100 million people, primarily in the Punjab region of Pakistan and India, as well as by diaspora communities worldwide. A literary language since at least the 12th century, Punjabi is written with two writing systems: a Brahmic script known as the Gurmukhī alphabet, and a variant of Arabic script known as the Shahmukhi.
