Gianluca, Bruno and Franca speaking Abruzzese

Featuring Gianluca and his family using the Abruzzese variety of Neopolitan, one of the Romance languages which is also known as Napoletano-Calabrese. The Abruzzese dialect is spoken in Abruzzo, Italy. This video was recorded by Gianluca Zaffino and features him speaking Abruzzese with his parents, Bruno and Franca. Abruzzese is spoken by as many as 1.3 million people, primarily in Abruzzo, Italy. It is a variety of the Romance language Neapolitan, which is sometimes described by linguists as Napoletano-Calabrese; Neapolitan is spoken by as many as 5.4 million people across the southern regions of continental Italy as well as by diaspora communities worldwide, particularly in the Americas. Abruzzese (and the Neapolitan language) has no official status within Italy, and is not taught in schools. There are ongoing attempts to have the Neapolitan dialects declared official minority languages, some of which led to the region of Campania legislating for the protection of the language in 2008. As further efforts continue, the language and its varieties have nonetheless been used in music, literature, and theater for generations and are part of a rich cultural history.
