This video was recorded by Vojta Smekel in Prague, Czech Republic, where Dr. Karel Oliva lives and works. He is a professor of mathematical linguistics and syntax, having directed the Czech Academy of Sciences between 2003 and 2016. A polyglot, he speaks Czech, English, Bulgarian, Italian, German, and Russian, among others. His native language, Czech, is spoken by at least 10 million people, primarily in the Eastern European nation of the Czech Republic, also known in English as Czechia. An Indo- European language of the Slavic linguistic family, Czech is most closely related Slovak, as well Polish, and more distantly so to languages like Russian and Bulgarian. It has been a literary language since at least the 12th century, having first appeared in medieval letters and cookbooks.
