Bengali, also known as Bangla, is spoken primarily in the South Asian nation of Bangladesh, as well as in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Andaman and Nicobar, and by diaspora communities worldwide. A literary language since at least the 15th century, Bengali boasts its own alphabet, which is used by over 30 other languages today. Bengali is a deeply integral component to national identity in Bangladesh, with most historians pointing to the Bengali Language Movement (ভাষা আন্দোলন Bhasha Andolôn) in the 1950s as the genesis of the fight for independence from Pakistan. With more than 200 million speakers, it is among the world’s ten most languages.
