Igala is an Indigenous language spoken by the Igala people in Nigeria, primarily along the left bank of the Niger river. The language is part of the Niger-Congo family and is spoken by approximately 500,000-1,000,000 people. Most Igala speakers live in the state of Kogi.
Agnes is a heritage speaker from the Igala community who plans to collaborate with the Nigerian State Ministry of Art and Culture and with members of their community to create more Wikipedia content in the Igala language. They plan to edit, translate, and expand existing articles, and they plan on creating additional ones written in Igala. They hope that Wikipedia will be an effective way to create additional content for Igala speakers. Agnes additionally hopes that expanded Wikipedia presence will help Igala to gain greater attention and receive additional language revitalization resources in the future.
